Teen driver's Ed at a glance

Instruction (Learners) Permit
  • You must be at least 15 years of age and enrolled with a driving school certified to teach the teen driver's education program.
  • Have parental consent.
  • Passed 8 courses in previous two semesters.
  • Pay the Secretary of State the required fee.
  • Present at least three (3) separate forms of personal identification to the Secretary of State when applying for the instruction
    permit.
  1. The first identification to show date of birth such as an original or certified copy of birth certificate or a valid passport.
  2. A second piece of identification to show that you are or are about to become a resident of Illinois such as but limited
    to a piece of mail showing students name and the parents or legal guardians names on the envelope, picture ID
    from the student's school, or a school transcript with the student's name and address.
  3. And a third piece of identification to verify signature such as a Social Security Card or credit card
    NOTE: Documents presented must be original or certified copies.
    The Secretary of State will not accept photo or notarized copies.
    Some facilities may require that you present your social security 'card'
                        
    All documents will be returned to you.

       Driver's Education Requirements
    Must satisfactorily complete and pass an accredited driver's education course covering the following:
    1.Classroom instruction.
    2.The required hours of in-car lessons (Range or BTW).
    3. Hold instruction permit for at least nine (9) months.

    Other Requirements
Graduate to safety, In addition to the in-car lessons completed with the driving'
education teacher, teens are required to complete an additional 50 hours of
driving practice with a parent or legal guardian. Parents or legal guardian may
elect to have another person or a commercial driving school to provide all or
part of the graduate to safety hours. The person must be at least 21 years of
age and have been licensed for at least one year seated next to the student in
the passengers seat.

     Road Test
  • After completing all other requirements, student must take and pass the official  driving test (Road test) at the Secretary of
    State.
  • The test is administered by an officer of the Secretary of State.
  • You must provide a vehicle in good working order. (The State official will inspect your vehicle to make sure that it is safe).
  • Yo must present the insurance card for the vehicle to be used for the test.

After Licensing Requirements:
For the first 6 months or when you are 18 years of age,whichever comes first.
  • You are allowed only one person under 20 years of age in the vehicle with you.
  • Siblings and family members, one in the front seat, and as many as there are seat belts in the back seats.
  • License is not valid during curfew hours.
